Review: How to Knit a Love Song by Rachael Herron

I enjoy reading fiction books with a knitting theme. When I heard about How to Knit a Love Song from Book Club Girl, the book appealed to me. In this debut novel, author Rachael Herron writes a story about knitting and love between two very different, headstrong people. Abigail, a knitting book author inherits a cottage and the land it stands on, a sheep ranch from her mentor Eliza. This is the perfect time for her to make new roots as she needs to leave the city and a move to the country sounds like a great chance for her to put her past behind her and feel safe. Cade is the handsome nephew of Eliza and runs the ranch. He isn't too happy to hear that his aunt left the ranch to him but a cottage in the middle of the property to someone he doesn't even know. It seems like Eliza has done some matching up from the grave which annoys both Abigail and Cade.

There is a lot of tension between the two as they are very different but drawn to each other in many ways. Abigail wants to open a knitting store in the cottage on Cade's ranch. Cade's male bravado and pressure from the town cause much conflict between the two. I found the tension and drama to be a bit drawn out and predictable and weakened the plot of the story. There were some sweet moments and reading about knitting and the setting at the sheep ranch were highlights for me. Overall, this book was enjoyable but just not a favorite for me. I'm not a big romance reader so that could be why I felt this way. If you are a fan of romances and knitting you may enjoy this novel.

Rachael Herron is a popular knitting blogger at Yarnagogo. She has tapped into her love of fiber, spinning wheels and knitting and brought that to this new knitting romance series, the Cypress Hollow Series.

Book Club Girl On Air will have a discussion with Rachael Herron to discuss her novel, How to Knit a Love Song on March 17th at 7pm ET. Go Here to listen to the show.

  5. Bonnie, thanks for sharing about this book. I'm seeing all kinds of things around about it. I may pick it up at some point. Or maybe put it on hold at my library. I'm OK with romance, but knitting is getting to be a little overwhelming in book plots. :-)

  7. When I come across books that center around knitting, I think "comfort" but not much else. I am terrible about judging books by their covers too.
